To create a distinctive identity for the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015, themed “Feeding the planet, energy for life,” we drew inspiration from the iconic architecture of greenhouses. These geometrically simple yet technologically advanced structures reflect the complexity of modern food production.
The pavilion embodies a blend of tradition and innovation, structured as two identical halls differentiated by material. The first hall represents tradition, featuring exposed laminated wood porticoes that provide structural support while defining the space. The second hall symbolizes innovation, with porticoes clad in polished stainless steel that reflect and blur the pavilion's boundaries, alluding to high technology.
As a temporary structure, the Spanish Pavilion emphasizes efficient management of energy and materials, showcasing its sustainability through the use of natural and prefabricated products. The design promotes a semi-outdoor environment, reducing reliance on air conditioning and enhancing the pavilion's connection to its fairground surroundings, celebrating the Spanish penchant for vibrant street life.
